How to measure sweater length
I'm kitting my first sweater - it's a wrap-around and I'm on the left front. It says - Keeping armhole edge straight cont to dec at neck edge on every foll 4th row until 19 sts remain. Cont straight until front measures 19 in ending at armhole edge.

I'm at 19 stitches now and not sure where to measure - from where I'm knitting to the start of the armhole? Although it's my first sweater, it looks really long. The entire piece is about 26".

I'm frustrated! I've read other posts about shoulders and it sounds like mine is different because the front is in 2 pieces. Can anybody help?

It sounds as if you might have got confused by the inclusion of the 'armhole' phrase. You need to measure the whole front - ie. from the bottom hem up to your needle. Unfortunately it sounds as if you have gone too far but try to think of it as good practice of the stitch for the future bits that you are going to do

Where the armhole comes in is when you are working out whether to stop on a right-side row or a wrong-side row. If you stop on the wrong side, you can end up with your pattern being 'back-to-front' - with stocking stitch on the wrong side, for example. The 'stopping at armhole edge' means that when you get to 19.75 inches, you should stop on a row that ends at the armhole side rather than at the neck side.

Hope that helps!

Thanks so much! You are totally right - I was reading it to stop measuring at the armhole edge and it makes sense when you say it means to stop knitting at the armhole edge.

I'm using silk yarn which doesn't re-knit very well but luckily I have extra. I'm beginning to think I should have chosen an easier sweater pattern but I guess this is learning :-)

Thanks again!
