Counting stocking stitch rows

This seems like a silly question to me but I need to ask it anyway.

Does 1 row of knit stitch + 1 row of purl stitch = 1 row of stocking stitch

Or does 1 row of knit stitch + 1 row of purl stitch = 2 rows of stocking stitch?

The pattern I'm knitting says I need to knit 11 rows of stocking stitch (I'm knitting the thumb on a woman's mitten).

Each time across the needle is one row - so the 2nd one you list is correct: 1 row of knit stitch + 1 row of purl stitch = 2 rows of stocking stitch.

If you're doing stockinette (stocking stitch) don't worry about the back side of the work where the purl rows are. Just count on the front side. Each V is a row.

Or you may find it easier to count the purl bumps. But count every one of them.
