Need help writing a pattern

I know many people who are having babies this year. I have a sewing pattern that I want to make into a knit one. The side that I want to start with is 22 inches long. According the the yarn that I am want to use it says: for a 4x4 in square 22 sts x 30 rows. Would this actually mean that I would have to cast on over 1200 sts? That can't be right...can it? Would I be better off using 2 strands and using a larger needle size? I have been trying to figure this out...any help would be great!!!!!

My calculations say you cast on 121 stitches. Remember your swatch is over 4", so it's 5.5 stitches per inch. If you multiply 5.5 x 22, you get 121 stitches. I'm assuming you meant 22" WIDE, not long, right?
I'm not a math whiz, so if someone has better explanations, speak up!

I am sorry, your right it is 22 inches wide. Sorry for the error. I think that I understand what you are saying...and silly me...and THANK YOU!!! I realized that I forgot my decimal point. So it would be 121 stitches. WHEW!!! I thought I was done before I even started. That makes much more sense now.
