Help! I need to organize my yarn ....

So my dh built me some lovely shelves for all my yarn. (I secretly think he just wants to be able to see how much there REALLY is if it's not squirreled away about the house, but I digress)

I am not by nature an organizer - the only way I've kept my yarn up until now is vaguely by color ... or by where I happen to be when it comes in. So how do you all sort yarn? By color? Fiber? Weight? Project? HELP!

Do you keep it in bins, baskets or wire baskets? Just on the shelves?
