Help! I need to organize my yarn ....
So my dh built me some lovely shelves for all my yarn. (I secretly think he just wants to be able to see how much there REALLY is if it's not squirreled away about the house, but I digress)

I am not by nature an organizer - the only way I've kept my yarn up until now is vaguely by color ... or by where I happen to be when it comes in. So how do you all sort yarn? By color? Fiber? Weight? Project? HELP!

Do you keep it in bins, baskets or wire baskets? Just on the shelves?

Here are the shelves, and I have a few baskets and bins....

And a bit of the stash

Any ideas would be a help! Thanks!

OOOHHH - How lucky you are! My DH would never do that for me - he thinks my stash (which I consider quite small) out of control!! Right now I have mine semi-organized in one of those sweater sorter things you hang in a closet, and in a few baskets. For now, mine are basically sorted by project type - baby, scarf, sweater, etc.

I am SO jealous - good for you!!!

Thank you! And I think he did do it because he thinks it's out of control too - either that or he's tired of opening baskets all over the house and finding yarn I don't even think I have THAT much, it's just sort of all over.

I try to organize it by type of project, so I put together yarns that would go together in a project. The difficulty is it's not always so clear which ones will go together.

And I keep it in baskets so I can see it. If I can't see it, then I sort of forget it exists, and then I buy more...

Those shelves look great! If I had enough stash to need to organize it (one day!) I think I'd organize it by weight/fiber/color but I'm a little obsessive like that You might want to keep it in baskets or bins just to keep the dust at bay, but dust might not be as much of an issue for you as it is for me.

I am sure you will think I am out of my organizing mind... but... I organize by how much I like it
Acrilyic stuff I don't really like is in one area, cotton in another area, stuff I have a lot of the same colorway in another, and good stuff in another area. Good stuff is the stuff I love. Most recent good stuff that has not found a home yet is on the floor in ziploc bags. I like to still look at it.

Eta: For some reason I just realized I organize my books the same way!

I just organized my yarn by type, I guess. If I had 7 skeins of Yarn A color B, all of them went into the same Ziploc bag. I don't think I had any cases of Yarn A color C, though. If I had assorted skeins of different colors of the same weight yarn (1 of this and 1 of that) those all went into 1 ziploc bag. Mostly, though, I've bought enough for projects that I've just never got around to, so it was bags of matching yarn.

For your shelves, I'd be tempted to use some clear boxes of some kind for the bulk of the storage, with some open baskets for the projects you currently have going and for contrast with the utilitarian clear boxes.

I go and organize mine by type and color as well as project.

If it's a project I really want to do, i put it in a clear plastic bin along with the pattern (I have cats, this keeps them out of it)

I use those gallon size bags to sort my yarn... makes it easier esp if i end up allergic to the yarn... so i have all of one color of one type/brand in one bag (ie: all my fashionista in berry is in one bag) and I have my cottons separated into warm and cool....

most of my yarn is in my 21 gallon bin (i dont' have much, what can i say LOL) and my WIP's are in yarntainers and my knitting bag all stored in my deluxe rolling craft cart that I picked up at Joann's (the big purple one).

I have mine organized by the kind of FO's it's for. I also have my acrilyic yarns in another area. I tried to list all my yarn's on Ravelry. I gave up on that. I have so much stash it would have taken me forever to list it all
Mine is in those sterilite stackable plastic drawer's. I have one closet full of those and some of them sitting around in my craft/computer room. I also have lots of baskets full of yarn. At one time I did post a picture of all of this on here.
I'm not sure if I have a problem with hoarding all this yarn or not. Although I do knit with it, I'll never be able to use it all. I just love to buy yarn.
