buttons and buttonhole placement

I'm knitting a child's cardigan and it calls for two bands down the front. I've knit the first band and placed pins for where the buttons will be placed. Now I need to do the second band (where the buttonholes will go). How do I do the buttonholes (the pattern says to k2 together, yo), and since the band is only one inch (which is 4 rows), on which row do I begin the buttonhole? I'm totally confused since I've never done this before . . .

It sounds like you picked up stitches to work the button/buttonhole bands. That type of buttonhole, where you just k2tog, YO is worked over only 1 row. I think I would work it on the second row. But you could work it on the 3rd if you like. The BO row will make the band slightly wider and that may look fairly centered. You could do a little sample band swatch and see which placement looks best.

I agree with everything Merigold said. When torn between centered or slightly left of center (as you face the garment) sometimes going one row closer to the body of the sweater will net you buttons that look centered once buttoned as they'll tend to pull toward the other side. A buttonhole that's directly in the center of the band, once buttoned, will sometimes cause the button to pull too far to the edge of the band. But depends on the sz of the button, the bh and how much tension on them.
