I have to say if I were to buy a hand dyed yarn I would assume that it would change color a bit when washed. I would be really interested in seeing the finished project to see just how faded it was. I would really assume that some small degree of fading would be expected. (I am going by the tye die shirts we just did in my DDs preschool. They were still vibrant but obviously not quite as vibrant as before they were washed) I think you are getting good advice about expressing your apology and honestly stating you don't know what happened. If I were the customer I guess the most I would expect would be my $ back, I wouldn't expect any other compensation or anything.

Thank you for all the input.

I did let the owner of the LYS know that i was more than wiling to work with the customer, so she gave the customer my contact info, although I have yet to hear from her.

I also picked up all the remaining skeins from the LYS and am currently knitting up swatches to try to replicate the problem. So far on a standard warm water wash there has been virtually no fading. I have another swatch in the machine now and another OTN. If I can't replicate the problem, I may be left to suspect the detergent she used.
See what I've been working on at Smetana Dreams
for our new addition expected September 2009
