Welcome to KH

Usually it takes a while to get that first stitch looking right...it will usually appear very big and loose on your needle...after you practice and get your tension down then it all starts to fall in place...Amy also has a video on a small project that may help...When I first started I would just browse the videos over and over...

also if you pull the 2nd st tighter that may help...you'll get it

That will all come in time...first cast on like 30 some sts...and then just do the knit st on this piece till you are comfy with it...and then throw in the purl st along with the knit st (knit one row and purl the next)...after you think you have that down then bo this piece and hold on to it...that way later on you can see how far you have come...

fixing sts comes later when you see how the sts work...when I finally realized how to fix a mistake it was when I sat down and followed the yarn...then I knew how the yarn flowed to create the sts and how I would go about fixing them...

My first few times I was ready to chuck the yarn and needles out the window! ...don't give up...you can do it and there is always someone here to help

Here is Amy's videos on the purl stitch...I would work a bit more on the knit stitch till you think you have it down and then go to the purl stitch...

If you go to the top of this page to where the tabs are...if you hold your mouse over View Videos it gives you different options to click on...Getting started, Cast On, Knit, Purl, Increases, Decreases, Casting off, tips, and Advanced techniques

thank you again for your help I will keep working on it. I have been crocheting for about 10 years and I am still not very good at that. I when i have trouble I have no one there to show me what I have done wrong or show me what the directions are suposed to be.

That tab says VIEW videos ... every time i have looked at it i have read NEW videos and i always wondered why nothing new had been added im such a pea brain sometimes!

anyway back to the knitting.

I would stay just practice doing the knit stitch first. only when you are comfortable doing that is it worth moving on to the the purl stitch.
The loose stitch and the dropping of the needles will all get better with practice. Watch the videos (especially the small project one) and see how amy hold the yarn and needles.

They more rows you work the more comfortable they will get inyour hands. Don't worry if you don't hold things exactly the same way, it is all down to personal preferance, but it is ood to use as a basic guide as it keeps things in their proper place.

Dawn, I learned by watching Amy's videos...and then I showed my mom ...believe me if you ever get stuck on something just ask...everyone is so helpful here and it usually doesn't take long for them to help you figure it out and get you back to knitting

I'm learning how to crochet now and find it harder...mom does crochet so I'll be getting some tips from her this summer when we visit.
