How do I fasten off?

So I learned to crochet boarders around things I have knitted (squares for dishcloths, afghans, etc) but I don't know what to do with the yarn when I'm done. Do I need to somehow connect the first and last stitch? How do I weave it in?

Most times you join with a slip stitch into the first stitch or chain stitch that you began the edging with.
Then you cut the yarn with the last loop still on the hook . Cut the yarn leaving about 6 inches, then yarn over draw through the loop (all 6 inches). Remove hook and pull the cut end of yarn. You have closed the last loop and you weave the end in just like you would if you were knitting.
