cast on for afghan
Hi,

What would be the best cast on for an afghan? I always use the long-tail for everything, but wondered if this would work ok for an afghan. This is the first afghan that I've knitted and I'm supposed to cast on 178 stitches. The pattern also has cables in it.

Thanks,

You can use the longtail for just about anything. For that many stitches, you might want to use 2 strands. Knot them together, use one for the thumb tail and the other for the finger yarn, when you get to the end of the CO, drop the tail (cut it off later) and do the first row with the other strand.

Can you keep the knot out of the cast on that way? Sorry my brain doesn't seem to be fully working today....

You could actually knot the yarn, then make the slipknot a few inches down I think, and cut it off. Or anything else you could creatively think of.

I use LT for almost everything but lately have been doing the crochet CO for afghans being it visually matches the chain BO. (I like the CO/BO to match in this instance.) If you opt for the crochet CO, make sure to do it with slightly larger ndl or work loosely as it can tend to be a tad less stretchy.

How do you do the crochet cast on? I've done the provisional cast on--is this the same?

The crochet CO is one of the provisional COs
