Best size for a baby blanket?

I'm knitting a blanket for my baby boy and I'm not sure what size to make it. My original idea was to make it a 30" square, but it's about 20"x 30" now and it already seems big enough. Is there a preferred size for a baby blanket?

That's large enough for a carrier blanket. 30" square is usual, but they're also useful at 24" square, 24x30, 20x24, 32" or just about any size you can think of.

Well, I think I'm only going to use half of the yarn I had stashed for this project, so maybe I'll make 2....

Personally I did not like the rectangular blankets. I much preferred square so I could bundle them up easily. Rectangular ones always have one short side when doing that.

I don't know if you have already put this behind you have made up your mind but I have always liked square blankets instead of rectangular shaped. Like the pp said rectangular blankets always have one side that isn't quite long enough. But if you are just going to use it in the car seat or stroller then it's fine. One of my favorite blankets to use with my son (15 months old) in his crib is a rectangular blanket, but when he was little and I was only swaddling him square worked best... I hope this helps and doesn't sound redundant!
