Gauge - is this normal??
I'm trying to knit this scarf:
http://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter07/PATThalcyon.html

I usually don't check gauge, but since this is lace weight I decided I would. The yarn is a pain and tangles so easily, I just want to start off right with NO frogging if possible. The pattern calls for lace weight yarn and size 2 needles, gauge of 28 stitches per 4 inches (vertical 32 for 4 inches). I was pretty far off on a size 2. I'm up to a size 5 now. On 5s, my swatch is 3.5" for 28 stitches. I'm just wondering if I'm measuring wrong or something. I definitely tend to knit tightly, but that just seems like a really big difference to me.

Cast on about 36 sts and measure the 4" in the middle; the edge sts curl under and don't measure the same as sts in the center. It might be easier if you think of it as 7st per inch, right now you're getting 8. The needle size you use is the needle size you use, doesn't matter if it's a size larger or 6 sizes. If you do get 8 sts/inch, then the scarf will only be about 7" wide rather than 11". Oh, and the final dimensions are after blocking, so you should try to block your swatch too; it may be that you can actually back down to a 3 or 4.

I need to research blocking some, just how to do it. I've never done it before but I plan on it with another scarf I'm knitting anyway. Thanks!

Are you checking gauge in pattern, or in stockinette?

that is a mistake I have made before
