Help for Diagonal knitted sweater :knitting:

I saw the segment on Knitty Gritty where Barry Klein demonstrated diagonal knitting that was used in a child's sweater. I thought, no sweat, I can do this. Well I can do the diagonal knitting, but I need to know when and how to cast off for the fronts of this sweater. Can anyone help, please, please. I'm so happy with the look of what I've already done, but how do I finish??? wall:

Thanks for responding. No, that's the problem, I have no pattern. I went to www.trendsetteryarns.com and saw the sweater, but I don't think I can get the pattern from them as I'm not a retailer. (I was salivating over all the yarns) Anyway, I got the impression while watching the show that this was a piece of cake and dove right in. It was only when I saw the shape of the fronts (I always knit my two fronts together) that I realized I was in trouble. The bottom of the fronts is 6 1/2", the center side is 5", and the armhole side is 9 1/2". It looks as if I didn't increase and decrease every second row, but I don't think I'd have made that kind of mistake.

Have you checked the diynetwork.com website? Once in there you can go to Knitty Gritty episodes and the patterns are usually there. Some of the episodes you can replay on your computer(not sure if this is one of them). That is the only thing I can think of trying.

I have one pattern for a sweater knit on the diagonal. It's in the Yarn Stash Workbook by Laura Militzer Bryant. There doesn't seem to be any shaping to the front or back. She calls for increasing until 1 edge is between 20 and 24" depending on whether you are making small, med, large, x-large. Then increasing at beginning of row and decreasing at end of row for 2". Then decrease on both ends until one stitch remains. She calls for single crocheting around edges for 2 rounds. You then slip stitch shoulders together leaving opening for neck. Pick up stitches for sleeves and collar.

Thanks, this is a big help. There really isn't any shaping to my sweater. I'm using a multi-coloured yarn and just one solid colour to emphasize the diagonal striping. It's been so long since I picked up the needles (about 20 years) that I feel as if I'm starting over. I even had to think about which increase and decrease to use to fashion the sides of the garment. The stitch is just a garter stitch to add more interest. I'm quite pleased withh the way it is turning out. I was going to decrease on the long side and continue up the short side until they were equal. I'll try your suggestion and I can't tell you how much I appreciate you're being there.
