confused on pattern instructions--HELP!
I'm hoping someone can help understand a part of the pattern instructions of the vest I am knitting. The part I'm having trouble understanding is on shaping the armhole. It goes like this: NEXT ROW work 4 garter sts, 10 sts in St st., 36 sts in Garter st., 10 sts in St st, 4 sts in Garter st..--------What is the difference in the 2 sts as they are worked in the same row. I always thought St st was one row of knitting and one row of purling, and I thought garter st. was just straight knitting. So I'm rather confused on how to knit this particular row. Will be very thankful for any help I can get.

Is this WS or RS? If WS, the 'garter' sections would be K, the 'st st' sections would be P. If RS, yes, all sts would be K but you might want to place markers if these sections are creating shaping and you'll need to see exactly where those spaces are when you hit the WS.

Thanks so much for the info. I had come to a screeching halt on this part until I could find out how to that particular row. I am sure that I will be posting more questions on this particular pattern as this is the first actual garment I have attempted to make since I started knitting, other than scarves. It is a long vest I am making. Thanks again for your help. You're a life saver.
