I suggest 16" circulars. They can do a lot from hats to washcloths and so forth.... I've made many hats using my 16" circular needles. When you get comfortable with the 16" you could always move up to longer sizes and whatnot =)

Thank you to all who took the time to reply. I ended up ordering a slew of 24" circulars...gotta love EBAY. I guess I'll have to order larger sizes as I start new projects that are larger. What a great community this is!
