Newbie Question Re: Slipping Stitches

Hi. I need some help with a very simple pattern (sorry I've only been knitting since May).

My pattern is:

Row 1: K1, slip 1 (purlwise)
Row 2: Purl
Repeat these 2 rows

My question: When I slip the stitch purlwise, is the yarn in the back or the front?

I've noticed other patterns that expressly state that you are to bring the yarn to the front, and this pattern does not. So I have been doing my gauge by leaving my yarn in back.

Is this correct?

If it doesn't specify then I would leave the yarn in back when slipping stitches purlwise.

I'm presuming for row 1 you have to

K1, slip 1 (purlwise)

right across the row.

I'd definitely leave the yarn in the back when slipping purlwise here, because the yarn needs to be in the back ready for the next stitch, which is knit. Otherwise you'd be going yarn forward, yarn back right across the row - not, I think, what the pattern wants.
