help with baby hat
hi and thanks in advance for any help given. My daughter has asked for me to make a hat for her best friends 5mth old. This is the hat she wants
http://www.shescraftyknits.com/pdfpa...gePixieCap.pdf
now what i need help with is daughter wants it in 8 ply and pattern calls for 4ply so how do I adjust pattern so that hat isn't too big but would like it to fit next year. Or if I just stick to the 6mth pattern will there be alot of difference with sizing with the 8 ply wool. Oh I might add also the wool I'll be using is shepherd colour 4 me.
I'm still quite new to all of this.
Thanks again

As long as the yarn is the same weight it will look the same. I wouldn't go with a 1-ply or a 2-ply, as they will alter the apperance, and a 1-ply may cause a bias in the fabric.

She is talking about weight Braden; that's what they're called in Aus and NZ. A 4 ply is fingering weight, an 8 ply is like sport yarn.

You could try knitting the 3 mo size, using the 8 ply and 4mm needles or what you normally use for that weight. It may come out too large, though, so you might try casting on 98 sts. I picked that number because the difference in sizing is 6 sts for each size - 104 less 6 is 98. Do the same adjustment for the neckband.

Thankyou Braden for your fast reply

Thank you suzeeq you have been a great help... arrg I think I will have to try & remember the different names of plys of yarns. Umm you get the picture 4ply = fingering weight etc , etc. I was all in a frazzle as I wanted to get started right away. Well I took your advice and I now have about 4cms to go on the hat will post a pic when done. Oh by the way love your name I have a fondness of the name suzeeq as I used to listen to her when I was alot younger like 25 yrs ago ewww now I'm showing my age hehe, and also when my partner met my mum thats what he called my mum as her name was Susan but saddly she passed away just before christmas. Oh by the way I am from Melbourne, Australia. So you hit the nail on the head with where I am from.
Anyway thanks again for the help I appreciate it.

You're welcome....

Friends call me suzie or suzieQ so I just adapted a spelling variation for my internet name. I noticed that your location was Melbourne so that's how I interpreted yarn sizing.
