SSK
I have knitted many longies/shorties and even a skirty, but I"m now encountering something new: SSK.

I am knitting a cabled baby hat. The cable part does not sound difficult (in fact, the videos make it look quite simple). My question is regarding the SSK. I watched the video here on knitting help about SSK. I understand that you slip two stitches knitwise, then stick the left needle in and knit them together that way. OK, I understand.

Here is my problem: The pattern I am following says, "*SSK, K2tog, P2, K6, P2" then later says "K1, P1, SSK, K2tog, P1".

I am assuming that the SSK is a decrease, and the K2tog is ANOTHER decrease, but I want to make sure before I proceed. Is this two decreases, or not?

Thanks so much!!!

Yes. The SSK leans left, the K2tog leans right.

They are both shown here on the DECREASES page.

Makes sense! Now I feel silly... I should have looked that up! But it's nicer to have an answer from a person sometimes! Thanks!

You're getting it. I just want to tell you about the so called improved SSK. All you change is that you slip one kw and slip the second stitch pw. Some folks like the look of this a little better than slipping both of the stitches kw. Try them both on a little swatch and see which you like best paired with your k2tog.
