Help with Pattern Correction

This pattern calls for a guage of 23sts for 4 inchs. It has me cast on 92 stitches and Im supposed to have a 24 inch back. It doesnt add up to me. According to my math a 92 inch cast on if Im getting guage will equal about a 16 inch back. Mind you this is for a 6-12 month old baby. Later in the pattern the back sts get decreased to 69. A 24 inch back seems really big. Its a matinee jacket in a book called easy baby knits. Is it just me or does this not make sense? I dont know if this helps but here are all the measurements listed in the book. 24 inch for the back 12 3/4 inches for the length and a 7 inch sleeve seam. TIA

Here's my guess-- they mean 24" all the way round. 69sts equals 12". So by the time you get to that decreased section, it would come out as half of the total measurement around, which would be 24", which would be right for a 6 month - 12 month old baby, in a loose-ish fit.

So you mean from like the right front round to the left front the entire garment will be 24 inchs around? So I shouldnt expect my back piece ALONE to be 24 inches wide right?

Yes, it's probably the width for the whole body and the back would be half of that.

Yes-- in other words, what they most likely meant to say, is that the entire measurement around of the garment should be a total of 24". So that would mean the back is half of that-- 12", and the right front would be 6", and the left front should be 6". The fronts may not be each exactly 6", as there will be some overlap for buttons and button holes, or a zip, etc. But that adds up to 24" total.

I asked about the publisherof the book because I wondered if a had it (and the title "Easy Baby Knits" seems to be a very popular one

). But I don't.
