Cast on: do not join
I am pretty new to knitting and am attempting my first sweater. I have gotten completely confounded one of the directions. In the pattern directions for the back it says "cast on 86 st. Do not join." What does the "do not join" mean?

Thanks in advance for any helpful replies!

It means you will use a circular needle, but knit flat like straight needles, so you don't want to join like you would for knitting in the round.

And if you get confused make sure the working yarn (the one you will be knitting with) is coming from the left hand needle just like when you're using straight needles.
