can I do this?
I want to make a sweater pattern that with a yarn that I have in my stash, which has been waiting for the right sweater and I want this sweater! Problem, the gauge says 14 sts and 20 rows=4", my gauge is 20 sts and 20 rows=4". I think if I go up a needle size it just won't look right. would I make the next size up or won't that work?

Since this is a top down raglan that starts with the same number of sts for all sizes, you can try it on as you go and increase the sts until it fits. So you can do this -
" Next RND: knit
Next RND: ( knit to 1 st before marker, KFB, sl marker, KFB ) 4 times , knit to end 204 sts
Rep last 2 rnds 1 (4,7,11)times more. knit 1 rnd"

-- until it's the right size for you. Then divide the sleeve sts off and finish it up.
