You may be getting a ladder effect from dropping stitches. Dropped stitches will look like this:

I've been able to minimize laddering by pulling tight on the yarn on the second stitch on the dpn. Another trick is to convert dpns to magic loop, using a circular needle with a very flexible cable (I like the KnitPick's Harmony circulars).
