adding a zipper

I knitted a sweater for a Christmas present but it requires a zipper. I sewed the zipper to grosgrain ribbon first but when attaching to the sweater my sewing machine messes up. Has anyone ever done this?

I believe most people sew zippers to hand knit garments by hand. I'll have to see if I can find some info as I've never done it..

Thanks for the help. I found the web site and that very smart person included pictures so I should survive this experience with only a pint of blood lost. I shouldn't be allowed near sharp needles. Thanks again.
