Please Help (!) with Path of the Heart
I'm relatively new to knitting and have been struggling with this "Path of the Heart" pattern. Below each "complicated" row is what I thought I needed to do for the reversal based on internet searches. However, I don't even know how close I've gotten since after about 10 rows I always end up short a stitch. If anyone has an idea of what I'm doing wrong, I would GREATLY appreciate the help! Thanks. :-)

Is this the pattern you're doing:

http://riaknits.wordpress.com/2008/0...heart-pattern/

If so please remember that the chart is read from the bottom right hand corner up. so the first row (after the 4 rows of garter [knit each of those 4 rows]) is as follows:

K4 (for the border and then the pattern is: ) K5, yo,ssk,yo,ssk, k3, k2tog, yo, k2tog, yo, k6 - then k4 (again for the border). From your description it looks like you might be reading the chart backward. The second row IS read from left to right though. You work the charts that show every row from right to left, left to right, right to left from the bottom to the top of the chart. Kind of tricky.

The second row would be a WS row, which the pattern tells you to purl. For this you would k4 for the border then purl to the last 4 and k4 again.

As far as losing stitches I am not sure how to answer, but I'm sure someone else might have some tips. The only thing I can think of is that you might be forgetting a yarn over here and there and when you decrease (either a ssk or a k2tog) you might have wound up losing the stitch count.

From the Path of the Heart pattern I've seen, your purl rows should be all purl, rather than a reversal of the knit rows. Well, all purl except for the 4 border sts which would be knit (forgot this part!). From what I see of what you've written above, however, your reversal seems to match stitchwise, so I'm not sure where you're having a problem.

I would probably, for a few rows, count off the stitches as I go, plus count at the end of the row again to be sure. If that didn't help, I would stop and put markers after every 10 sts, and then count those as I went...just to see exactly where the problem is,

Just to add -- YOs don't use a stitch, they add one, which the decs will take off so your stitch count stays the same. A yo is just wrapping around the needle, not wrap and knit 1, then knit the next stitch.
