how to read a pattern?
I'm a newbie. I have a simple pattern to make a scarf, but I don't think I understand how to read the pattern.

Cast on 22 sts. (I did this)
Knit 2 rows. (I did this too)

K2 (P2, K2) 5 times and then P2 (K2, P2) five times.

does that mean knit two stitches, and then alternate purling and knitting 2 stitches five times? Or knit two stitches together (decreasing) and then so on?

Thanks!

Yes, it means to knit two stitches and then alternate purling and knitting 2 stitches five times. When a set of stitch instructions are framed in parentheses followed by a number of times, it means to do the pattern within the parentheses the indicated number of times. It's a lot more concise than writing K2, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2, K2.
