ECO KNITTER?!

Hey all, I have been clearing out my wardrobe and I have found a knitted sweater I had bought that doesnt fit me any more. My question is: Can I salvage the wool from the sweater, and if so how?!!!

Turn the sweater inside out. Check the seams. If it is knitted then you should see selvedge stitches. If it is cut out of knitted fabric you may see raw edges. If it looks handknitted and sewn together you should be able to remove the sewing and find the woven in end at the shoulder and start unraveling. If it is cut from a knitted fabric you will end up with short pieces of yarn only as long as the pieces are wide and they will be pretty well useless.

PlantGoddess -That sounds great, and really simple. The jumper I am talking about is quite a coarse coral pink, baby pink and white combination. I reworked another knitted jumper (a creamy white -gorgeously soft) previously by removing and changing seams (similar to what you have explained), so I understand what its about. ...Thinking about that jumper I haven't actually worn it... hmmmm....


If this method works really well, it will take at least one ball of wool to create the body of a jumper +sleeves and if I go to a secondhand/charity shop and find a knit in a colour I like and recycle the wool from it. Theoretically, I could get 2 or more balls of wool for less than the original price of one!

(I feel like a thrifty genius, but dont worry it probably wont last. I will be trying to attempt my first pattern, that will my first lace, and my first attempt at doing a purl stitch, on a bigger-than-recommended knitting needle, with not-recommended-for-this-project wool... Oh did I mention I'm a beginner knitter, still learning the basics!)

Hey all,
Just a quick note to say that I have spent the last 4 days or so, frogging two woolen sweaters/pullovers (bought, not made). One pinky white one and a beigey cream one. I thought the wool on both of them had passed being salvageable. Now I have a huuuuuge wool stash of many decent size balls of wool! Oops.

The pinky one has a ball of yarn that is HUUUUUGE hehe. Cant wait to use it, my mind is thinking up projects!!! The wool is kind of chunky weight, not particularly soft, but not particularly harsh either.

The beigey cream one is thinner, 4 ply and first time I felt it I thought it was cashmere type. It is soooo soft, fine and lovely. Now I think it resembles instant noodles!!!


Turns out, they are both 100% acrylic. Who would think acrylic could have such different properties and colours?
