knitting two wools together

Good evening everyone. This is my first post. I am not a seasoned knitter and I am trying to knit myself a toque. I got a pattern from Martha Stewart.com. The pattern calls for 2 skeins to be knitted together. It says "c/o 40 stitches" does this mean with both wools so that I will have 80 stitches, and then do I knit each stitch separaately, with 2 strands?? This was supposed to be easy LOL/ Any help will be appreciated, as it is cold in my neck of the woods, and this sounded like a nice warm hat.

You treat the two strands as one. Hold them together and cast on 40 stitches. Each loop will have 2 in it, but treat them as one.

You'll get used to knitting with the two strands held together in very short order.
