I am knitting a baby blanket with a garter stitch border, and st st inside. On one side of it, it is the st st pattern (v's), on the other side, it looks like garter stitch. Is this normal?

Garter stitch and purl rows look very similar. The back of a knit stitch is a purl and vice versa, so when you knit in stockinette, one side will have the V's and the other will have all purl bumps.
