Yes, I am keeping notes. It's a REALLY easy pattern to do. It's actually my first real try at fair isle knitting! I plan on making the pattern available on Ravelry once I've made sure all the kinks are out.
And by four alternating color segments, I mean this: Let's imagine the top is a circle. Draw two intersecting lines through it in order to have four wedges. Now color in each segment, alternating the colors. So 1/4 of the top in brown, next 1/4 in yellow, and so on. I may try stripes as well.

Well, I love how the yellow colour of the ribbing blends right into the first row of yellow squares... so I would think of making the top of the hat solid brown, so it blends into the last row of brown squares
