mittens pattern help!

Hi, I'm trying to knit some mittens but I'm a little stuck!
I got down to where it says "Next Row: Follow S1, K1 pattern to and including first p st. Work in pattern across next 8 sts of thumb. Turn. CO 1 st and p across - 9 sts. Turn. CO 1 st - 10 sts." and I don't understand what it means by "work in pattern across next 8 sts of thumb."
The whole part with the thumb seems kind of complicated. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi and welcome to KH, I had to remove the whole pattern 'cause of copyright laws. Can you give us the name of your mitten or a link, so we can help you better?

It wants you to work the 8sts 'cause it's setting up your increases for the thumb. It does want you to knit across 8 sts of the thumb, you will then turn so the wrong side of the mitten is showing and cast on 1 more st. Then purl back across, turn so the right side is showing and cast on more st.

You will then have 10 thumb sts and work in pattern until it's 2" less than the required thumb length

I'm pretty new at this so I'm kind of confused about how to cast on in the middle of a row, and also for the next part of the directions, does that mean continue knitting and purling back and forth over those ten stitches only?

Actually, I found out how to cast on in the middle but after doing so do I turn again and purl back over the stitches I just knitted or just purl on the wrong side? That makes a big hole in the middle so I feel like that can't be right.

It reads like you would just work over the 10 thumb stitches back and forth in pattern. Then once it's 2 rows less than the thumb required then you would work a K2tog across the row...turn and work P2tog across the sts... You then cut the yarn but leave enough of a tail to weave through the remaining thumb sts on the needle and then to sew up the seam on the thumb (maybe this is the gap?)

Can you post a picutre of what it is looking like with the gap?
