Knit One Purl One Knit One in next stitch

I am trying a pattern that says to knit 2,* (k1,p1,k1) in next stitch, p3 tog: repeat from * to last 2 sts and knit 2. I am just testing it out. I cast on 17 stitches and do the pattern and I end up with an incorrect number of stitches. I am pretty sure I am doing the k1,p1,k1 correctly, but I can't seem to get it right. Any suggestions?

I tried it on 17 and it doesn't work evenly, but on 16 it does. Are you sure you have to use 17?

There should be a multiple of 4 sts, so that's why 16 works.

I realized I was just getting guage. The pattern said to work 17 stitches over the pattern stitch. It should have read differently. Thanks.
