Needle storage

Can you experts give me some suggestions for needle storage--I have both straights and circulars. I like the cord of my circulars to be as straight as possible, so rolling them up in a baggie won't work. Help this novice get organized please.

I have Options so they have a case and the cables never curl, but I know some people use this type of holder for their circs.

When I first started regular knitting, I bought a 70, yes 70!!, piece DPN set. I had no idea what to do with them to keep them organized. So I thought about it... and I figured it out. I took two contrasting yarns, and knit a 8x20" rectangle. It was stockinette except for the top and bottom, which I did in reverse stockinette. It helps to keep the needles in there. I then put all of my DPNs in order onto it by inserting them into the loops. Each size alternated the colors, so I could easily pull out each "set" if I needed to. Starting from the largest needle size, I rolled the thing up as tightly as I could. Then, I secured two loops of yarn on the outside, which I then wrapped around the entire bundle. Voila, super inexpensive needle holder! It takes up very little space, holds everything pretty securely, and has held up really well even though I go into it all the time.

As for cables... I suppose you could probably do something similar for them as well.

I use the Circular Solution that Jan linked to. I love it--my circs are always readily available and never curled.

I don't remember the last time I used a straight needle, so most of those went to my DIL.

Not sure where I saw this but it looked like a good idea to me...
They made a circular needle holder out of old thread spools.
The wired thru the holes so that the spools all hung down in one column and attached them to the wall.
They stored the circulars by pushing the needles thru the hole so that the wires went thru and the needles hung down.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I'm shocked that so many people don't use straights. If you're knitting something narrow, like a narrow scarf, do you use circulars? Isn't the cord too long and doesn't it get in the way?

I either use a 20" or 24" circular needle for scarves or sometimes I'll use a couple of double points if the scarf is really narrow. I wrap one end of each of the double point needles with one of those tiny hair rubberbands. Works great.

For portable circular storage, I was considering a thin-ish (1 or 1.5 inch - 2.5 or 4 cm) three ring binder with CD storage sleeves.

I figure the pockets would be large enough to limit coiling of the circular's cables.

For circulars with longer cables, maybe a full sized sheet protector would be better?

I never really had trouble with it. Also, Knit Picks interchangeables give you the option of using one cable per needle, screwing an end cap on the other end of each cable, and using them like straights!
