Hedgie Hat
Let me first say I was very tired & trying to entertain a toddler when I agreed to this!

Yesterday Ladybug and I read one of her favorite books -- The Hat. When we finished, she wanted to dress up her "Hedgie" like in the book -- a knit sock. I didn't have any, so I said I would knit one for her. I have no problem trying to figure out how to make my first sock so that it fits Hedgie. Then she asked me for a Hedgie hat for herself.

Any suggestions how to make a sock shaped hat for a toddler's (19" head)? I'm still too sleep deprived to try and design one myself.

Thanks so much! Glad I didn't try to post this on 4/1!

Do a swatch with the yarn you want to use and get a fabric you are happy with for your hat. Count the number of stitches you are getting per inch, and then using math figure out how many stitches you need for your 19" head (you usually make a hat a little smaller so it will fit snuggly)

See if this sit helps you any with how many stitches you need to use for the heel: http://www.socknitters.com/Tips/heels_by_the_number.htm

I noticed her numbers don't go up any further than 80 stitches, but you could figure based on the system there how to do it. Maybe you could use a yarn that would use about 80 stitches for the hat? Another help site might be Silver's Sock Class.

I hope this gives you some helpful ideas.

I'm not sure this will be what you are looking for but it is really cute.

I have no idea what a "Hedgie Hat" is.

Thank you, MerigoldinWA for the suggestion!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Mazie! That's exactly what I was looking for!

Hedgie is a hedgehog in The Hat who finds a sock that has blown off a girl's clothes line, which gets stuck on it's head. The character bluffs it's way through the situation so that other farm animals creat hats out of the girl's knit clothing. Great book with knit things in it for the children.
