I went into michaels the other day and the yarn sections was fairly bare and there were signs saying new yarn dept coming this spring. Does anyone know what is going on?
There's a huge thread somewhere on Ravelry about this. Apparantly they're redoing their yarn department, reducing the amount of novelty yarns and working on their own Michaels brand of yarns.
If you're on Ravelry, search "Michaels" in the "6 main boards only" and it should bring up the thread if you feel like wading through the entire thing.

In the meantime, they're having some pretty good sales. I got like 15 skiens for under $30, including some Bernat cashmere for, a ton of the Bernat satin (that I used in my Drop Stitch scarf, in different colourways) for Christmas knitting and some "oddly" coloured wool blends (bright yellow, green) perfect for some toys I had planned.

My Michaels is also doing this. There's very little yarn to choose from, even less thread, and they've let their notions section go empty as well. Can't wait to see what they have in store (pun intended). They mostly carried acrylics so it would be nice to see some higher end brands in there just so we could have a choice. That would set them apart from the other craft stores.
Oh golly, must go see. The nearest Michaels is a 1.5 hour drive from me though.
I have been searching for and visiting as many small yarn stores as I can possibly find within a 2-hour drive. Not tooo too many,
= disappointing.
I have tried ordering online, and the shipping and taxes to Canada just about triples the prices for me = not worth it.
I will continue my searches though, haven't driven east yet, only north and west.
Aah...that might explain the very limited selection of yarn when I went a couple of weeks ago - just needed some cotton and they had very little of that...or anything else!
