Tracy Chapman "Toys to Knit" Kangaroo Question
So my boyfriend's mother bought me a copy of this book in Hungarian for Christmas. I really like the book, and I'd like to knit the Kangaroo and Joey, but the instruction right at the beginning of the pattern makes nooooo sense to me and my boyfriend can't really help since he's not a knitter.

So, I'm really hoping someone has a copy of this book in English and can help me out because, while I will attempt to translate the part I'm struggling with, since I don't understand it, it might not be correct. Here it goes:

"Cast on 34 stitches. Knit 9 rows in stockinette.
Next step: Decrease 16 stitches through 1 stitch. Turn until the end. 18 Stitches"

???

Okay so we went from 34 stitches to 18 so 16 stitches disappear somewhere in that row. But all in the same stitch? If anyone has an English copy and an instruction that makes more sense than my translation I'd be very greatful.

Equally frustrating is that all it says under "materials" is that I need cotton yarn and size 3.75 and 4 mm needdles. I imagine that guage (there is no gague listed) is not crucial in a stuffed animal, but I do wish it at least had at least some guidlines so I'd know how much yarn I need to complete the pattern. It also doesn't say the finished measurements of the toy. I'm thinking of knitting in knit picks organic cotton worsted, do people think 2 100 yard balls of the main color will be enough? Based on the photo of the kangaroo on the stairs, I'd say it is about 10 inches high.

7 people on Ravelry have made it, and some have noted that there are errors in the pattern, one suggested there might be errata for it, but I don't know where they might be published!

Thanks, I didn't think to check for errata. But unfortunately my problem isn't there (though probably I will need that later). I think my best hope might be to find a hungarian speaking knitter...

I'm certainly not Hungarian, but I'd read that decrease row as to decrease evenly across the row down to 18.

That would be my guess, too. Maybe it means decrease 1 at a time down to 18 stitches? Meaning, k2tog instead of k3 or k4tog? Or something like that...

I think I will try decreasing evenly accross the row as it seems the most logical choice. I think the reason I was second guessing that initially is because if I decreased every stitch I'd end up with 17, not 18. But I guess I can just not decrease 1 stitch somewhere in the middle.
