Changing colours with a sl st selvage?

I'm knitting an ear flap hat (my own design, wooo!) and I'm using a sl st selvage on the flaps.

I wanted to make some stripes in the flaps, but I don't know how to change colours with the sl.

Any advice would be much appreciated!
