Hello from Ireland - alternatives to Sirdar Bigga?
Hi,

I am a new knitter and have found a lovely pattern using Sirdar Bigga but it has been discontinued. I like the idea of knitting with BIG wool on BIG needles so could anybody out there suggest a similar yarn please.

Many thanks, Irishmam

Hmm. Yarndex says it's still being produced - if it was only recently discontinued, you may be able to find some online. http://www.yarndex.com/yarn.cfm?yarn_id=1188

How easy is it to find US produced yarns there? I'd consider Lion Brand's Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn - it's a washable, inexpensive, nice yarn, and my favorite Super Bulky yarn.

I've shopped from this UK based e-bay store, and they're reliable and good. A search for "super bulky" found two yarns - both pretty colorful: http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Cucumber...__W0QQ_armrsZ1

There's an Irish group on Ravelry by the way. Where do you live? I have a map of all wool shops in Ireland I made here, some have a better selection than others!
I have used Sirdar Denim Ultra in the past, which is only 10mm needles not 15mm, but it depends on the pattern and whether you would need to modify it a lot or not.
Rowan big wool is nearly the same recommended needle size, but is prob more expensive

I will drop by the Irish group. I actually found a great reference yesterday for irish wool shops (I am in the middle of nowhere in Co. Roscommon - nearest is prob galway City). Emailed the same question to a few suppliers who just told me they did not stock Sirdar , so that was a help!

Am off to E-bay (again!) with cftwo's suggestions.

Thanks again

Hi Cftwo,

thankyou so much for going to all the trouble of finding these links. I have just made a purchase! I live in a very rural place and so buy pretty much everything online - just never thought of the super bulky search (too new to knitting).

Will let you know how my project goes - its a cardigan/jacket for me.

You're welcome. I live in a rural place, too (I jokingly say I'm about 50 miles from just about everything), so I've come to rely on internet orders!

Sirdar have a list of shops that stock their yarn by county here, but I'm not sure how up to date it is
There's one listed for Roscommon:
Stitch In Time
Larkhill
Raheela
Frenchpark
But I can't find any reference to them elsewhere on the internet

I tried them. Frenchpark is just up the road - I also got it from the Sirdar website. Unfortunately I got no response to my email and the town is tiny and I know there is no wool/yarn/craft shop (no shops at all really)

I went back to my faithful Ebay and followed a link to Discount-yarns in the UK and have bought 20x100g of Bigga Heather. I will have 7 extra but am sure I can make something nice with it. Best bit - got the 2000g for 30. (40 inc postage) v.v. cheap! here is the link to add to your list of resources

http://www.discount-yarns.co.uk/index.html

Will let you know how I get on.

Nope, can't take credit for that, just the map, which I have told ravelry about so hopefully they will add it to their list of shops and their map
