Color Change Question

I'm making this pattern:

Anyhoo, I'm up to my first color change. The pattern is a sort of basketweave so I do 4 K and then 4 P and alternate. When I changed colors, I can see the color change on the front of the piece every time I purl. When I knit the stitch, the color change shows up on the back. Am I supposed to be doing it that way? The bag will be felted but I'm pretty sure the color change will still be visible even after felting. I'm tempted to knit the first row of the color changes just to avoid seeing it on the front of the bag. Here's a pic to show you. If you click the pic it brings you to a larger photo.

What you said is exactly the way you get a clean color change. Knit across the first row and then begin the basket weave with the purling. I don't know why they don't tell you that (it seemed like a rather bare bones pattern). I'm not exactly sure how you will want to adjust the numbers of rows to keep everything right, but as long as you are consistant in what you do it will probably look fine.

I did knit that first row of the color change, then picked up with row 2 in the pattern and it looks like it's supposed to look. Yes, they really needed to state that in the pattern, especially since they rate that pattern "beginner". I did learn that it's incredibly easy to tink back that first row of the color change! You can see the stitches of each row perfectly.
