Commercial or home knitting machines? Commercial ones use much thinner yarns, but you can hand knit with them too. Many people make shawls with the yarn, or double it up to get heavier yarn. Home machines usually use the same yarn as hand knitters.

Only difference I know is that knitting machine yarns usually come on cones. I know several knitters that hand knit things from cone yarns. I've got several cones of yarn myself, picked up at a mill end dealer. And I don't even own a knitting machine unless you count the round hand crank thing sold at craft stores.
