Please help me with this....

I want to start the gauge for this pretty Fair Isle Cardigan...

For the gauge it says: "8 sts=1", 9 rnds=1" using size 3 needles over Fair Isle pattern.
So do they expect me to cast on a few stitches on dpn to be able to work in the ROUND? They don't say how many stitches to cast on for this gauge.

To do a swatch in the round. cast on enough for more than 4 inches and knit across for the first row on a circ or dpn.

Then, rather than turning the work, slide the stitches to the other end and knit them again, loosely draping the yarn across the back. This way it measures your gauge for knitting every row rather than purling.

If you have enough yarn, you could also knit across, break the yarn, slide, and knit across again.

So in other words I can just cast on say 20 stitches on dpn and do the pattern for a good amount of rows and then measure?

Maybe CO more like 30 sts, but yes. To simulate knitting in the round, you slide the sts back to the right end of the needle and knit the rows, don't turn and purl back.
