I am a beginner. I cast on 15 stitches..a few rows later I have 18 stitches..not I have 23 stitches and my scarf is not straight. It begins 4 inches and then it varies to smaller and larger because my cast on stitches keep increasing. Can anyone offer any help?? Thanks

Well, there are several things that could be happening. I think that the most likely possibility is that you are accidentally doing a yarnover. There are times when you want to do a yarnover on purpose--for effect, but in your case you don't want this to happen. Be careful not to accidentally bring the yarn over the needle, thus creating an extra stitch. Also, be careful with the first stitch. It's easy to knit into both sides of the loop of the first stitch when your first learning to knit. I have made that mistake, too, a few times!

There is a sticky thread near the top of the How-to Questions page called "Mysterious Extra Stitches", I think it is. Look through that and you'll probably find the answer. Very common beginner problem.

It probably happens when you start a row and the yarn is over the top of the needle to the back to knit the first stitch, which pull it up and the 2 legs of it look like separate sts. Pull the yarn out to the side, then knit the first one.
