tight swift problem
I have a wooden umbrella swift. I find that it doesn't spin very well so that I stretch the yarn when using my ball winder. Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?

You're not doing anything wrong--it's the swift that's the problem. I have a wooden one, too, and had to sand and then oil the middle pole so that the outside umbrella thingy would move, well, swiftly!

I used fine-grit sandpaper and furniture polish, though mineral oil works best. (You probably know this, but don't use vegetable oils or the like because they go rancid.)

I was going to suggest the same thing, try oiling it. I have oil made especially for my spinning wheel, so something like that. Any shop that sells spinning supplies would be able to get you some, or via the internet I would think too. It's cheap, only $2 a bottle I think.
