having a tough time reading a pattern
my pattern says to make one stitch (pull horizontal strand between stitches onto left needle and knit into back of loop with right needle) k9 8 times
...what does that mean? It is in instructions for knitting a tam, and I got them at a Renaissance fair. Is that another way of saying to yarn over?

If the picture of the pattern looks like it's got some holes in it, then doing it exactly as it says will create that sort of a YO thing, but more tightly. But if not, then they mean to do a M1L or M1F, as in the videos here on this site for increases. It depends on how your sts lie on your needles. But (without seeing it) I'm pretty sure they mean the M1F.

Since it says to knit into the back loop, it would be like the M1 shown on the increases page.
