A yarn tip
When I start a new ball of yarn I always start fron the inside of the ball never from the outside of it.

What I mean is I get the strad of yarn from the middle of the ball, I find it easier to control the ball than me keep flicking the ball in the air to loosing the amount I want.

I do that as well, but not all skeins will do this some need to be rewound and hanks won't work at all. They have to be wound.

yeah, that's good idea to start from the middle of a ball, but it isn't always easy to find the end! and sometimes you pull out a great tangle of yarn in the process, and have to wind it back up. i once was given an old skein of Red Heart fingering yarn, and lo and behold, there was a little red foil heart attached to the end of the yarn, which made it so easy to use. wonder why this idea didn't persist? linknit41
