picking up for button bands etc
Whats the rule of thumb for ratio of picked up stitches vs rows? Is it 2 stitches for every 3 rows? Or 1 for every 2? I often just try 4 times until it looks good but I think I need to memorize the rule of thumb to make my life easier when designing stuff.

I think it depends on the yarn and needle sizes. 3/4 or 4/5 is usually the ratio that I find works. Sometimes a pattern will tell you how many stitches to pick up, and you can divide the edge into sections so you pick up the same number of stitches in each, but that doesn't help if you make the sweater longer or shorter than called for.

Usually 3 for every 4 rows, but some gauges might be 2 out of every 3. In garter stitch, it's 1 for 2.

That would probably work well. If you want it exact, figure your sts/inch vs rows/inch and use that.
