The easiest way to keep track is to look at your knitting. If the next stitch presenting itself is a knit stitch, purl it. If the next one is a purl, knit it. If you make a mistake and knit a knit or purl a purl, just take it out and do it the other way.
For the increases, you can knit into the front and back of the stitches to do the increase, and then work them in pattern on the next row. At the beginning of the row, you can look at the first real stitch in the pattern and count backwards to know where to start.
