custom hat and mittens patterns
Hi everyone, since I am a spinner, I am trying to collect some "all-purpose patterns" for various things. I have one for socks, one for a raglan sweater, a cardigan, and I'm now looking for one for a hat, and one for mittens. I'm talking about the kind of pattern where you do a gauge swatch, and measurements, do some maths and you can knit something to fit.

Anyone help? Also if you want me to share the patterns I have collected just ask.

Emma

Well, a hat one would be pretty easy....Once you have your gauge and an idea of your CO number, round it up or down to the nearest multiple of 10. Knit in the round with pattern of your choice (say 2 inches of K2 P2 ribbing, or K3 P2 ribbing then st st until the hat is long enough--six inches for youth and maybe seven inches for adult).

Your decreases would be to K8, K2tog around, knit one row even. Then K7, K2tog, knit one row even. Continue decreasing by K6, K2tog, Even round, K5, K2tog etc, until you get to the K1, K2tog round. Then eliminate the knit even round and continue the decreases on each round until you have one st for each wedge in the decrease sections. Cut yarn, thread onto a yarn needle and run it through all those loose stitches, cinch it up put it down through the tiny hole in the top of the hat and weave in the end.

If that doesn't make sense let me know....it's one of those things I do by heart and don't really think of all the words when I'm actually knitting it.

Jan and Lizzie THANK YOU SO MUCH! I am not a very experienced knitter, so what you people do by feel I have to do by formula at this stage. I am so excited to have these new patterns to add to my collection

Now I need a mittens one...

Ann Budd has a great book, The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns, with these kinds of patterns all ready part of it. Simple patterns that can be adjusted. Worth checking out if your library has it.
