Looking for Crocheted Diagonal Scallop pattern
I posted this in the Pattern Central page, but thought you crocheters here might be able to help me better.

Can anyone help me locate a crochet pattern that starts at a corner and increases to the desired width, then decreases to the opposite corner where each cluster is a scallop with a rounded top instead of a shell of 3 or 4 dc?

I would appreciate any pointers that anyone would be able to provide.

Off the top...

I can get you started. (I think. )

Ch4 Copyright by John Stevens, 2009

Row 1: 4 DC in 4th ch from hook, turn. (ch 3 counts as DC, made one corner 5 DC shell or scallop).

Row 2: Ch 3, counts as first DC, 5 DC in 1st DC (one edge scallop completed), sc in 3rd DC, 6 DC in top of turning chain, turn.

Row 3: ch 3 and 5 DC in first DC (edge scallop), * 7 DC in SC, SC in 4th DC, repeat from * across, end with 6 DC in top of turning chain, turn.

Repeat row 3 until the sides are the width desired. Copyright by John Stevens, 2009

Now, I think it gets sticky after this. My symbol sketch is not in scale.

I'll have to test this before I write any more. Copyright by John Stevens, 2009

If that helps you can use it for yourself and charity.

Thanks so much Jack! That sounds like a good start. I'll have to get my yarn and hook and give it a try. I was actually asking about this for a friend of a friend. She said her grandmother used to make afghans like this and she wanted to make one now that her grandmother is gone. Is it ok if I share this with her?

Thanks for all the time you spend helping others. You are so generous.

Urgh!
I tried it with some cotton yarn I have and a size H (5.00 mm) hook. The first scallop made a nice square corner, but the second row made the edges fan out beyond 90 degrees.

And I couldn't figure out how to decrease after you reach your longest diagonal. I guess one could always make two [triangular] corners and seam them together.

Your mileage may vary.

P.S. I don't have to give up my "master" title for that pattern suggestion, do I?

Even the master is stumped sometimes! I still haven't had a chance to try this myself, but I'm thinking maybe making the first and last scallops with less stitches in them. I will have to work up a sample to see how it comes out. I'll let you know if I come up with anything workable, because I think this would make a nice pattern.

Thanks for your help!
