For this instruction forget what you did to the stitch on the previous row and only look at the stitches that you're about to do. Look at your knitting and make a knit stitch, then turn it around and look at it on the other side, then do the same with a purl. The back of a knit stitch is a purl, the back of a purl is a knit stitch. But a previous row is already done, and you just work the stitches the way they look on this row.

I tried to view the video but the person's voice wasn't audible, it sounded like a telegraph machine or something like that.

It is an old video I made, with an old HP camera. There is no speaking during the video, because I had a cold at the time. You can watch it, read the subtitles, and turn off the volume.

Ah this site has helped alot. As a newbie knitter I was getting so frustrated with the pattern reversing on me all the time. Knit the knits, purl the purls!

Thanks

Read through the tips and tricks, most of which I did not really understand but I am sure I picked up a few things. Then I read and re-read the first page of this thread; I came to the conclusion that I would not be able to 'knit the knits and purl the purls'. My solution was just to carefully count stitches, easy peasy.

Working on my third project, a simple scarf for my partner. I lost count, but managed to 'read' the stitch on the completed row. Next row I managed to somehow added a stitch which I didn't notice until I had finished the entire row. But this wasn't really a problem since I found myself 'knitting the knits and purling the purls'. (On the following row I just stitched in my new extra stitched in with another so no harm done.)

So, thanks for the great tip.

cableguy, I'm glad you got it figured out. You even did a decrease it sounds like which can be a great way to make a correction. Be sure to ask any questions that come up as you knit.

changing from knit to stockinette
I know this is so elementary but...
work 4 rows in garter st (knit every row)
next row (RS) knit...duh. ok I knit 5 rows
continue in St st (k on RS p on WS)

Question: since all rows are k rows do I purl the next row to start the St st?

Thank you. Cat

Yes, purl the next row. The knit next row instruction is where your stockinette really begins if that helps you understand the pattern. If not, disregard.

Thank you GG. I understand perfectly. I wanted to purl the next row since i had to get a purl row started but i just didnt want to continue if it wasnt correct. Interptretation is the hardest thing (for me) about knitting.
