knitting a grid

I'd like to knit a loose grid in order to weave ribbons and other yarns through the grid after I knit it. I'm having trouble figuring out a pattern...knitting two together and then a yarn over on a cast-on of uneven stitches....would that work?

It should, why don't you take some leftover yarn and try it out. That way you'll know if you need to adjust it (a couple sts between the YOs) and how it will work out.
