Or....you could just use whatever you have around you to count the rows.
A piece of paper: tear into little pieces, the same number as the rows you're knitting. Move them from one pile to the other as you knit each row.
Coins: same thing - put out a pile of coins, the same number as the number of rows you're working. Move them to another pile as you knit each row.
You get the idea.....

LOL! Kids today.
We're watching Wild Hogs and my oldest daughter decided it was the perfect time to start IM'ing me. Hard to knit and type at the same time.

Hello. I'm going to join the party. I'm knitting a ribbed cap, watching the New Year's parties on television with my cat, Delilah. I went outside to look at the moon, but it's pretty overcast here (in Central Florida). The moon finally did peak through some of the clouds and it was so clear and full and bright.
2009 was a difficult year, so I'm looking forward to 2010.

Give it a shot. Just make sure you have your cell phone ready....or a fire extinguisher.

Now, if it's stockinette...it will be knit one row, purl the next row. Then repeat those rows over and over.
K1, P1 will be for ribbing or seed stitch. Good luck!
By the way, here are a couple free online Knitting Stitch Dictionaries that might help you as you're learning:
Library of Knitting Stitches
Knitting Pattern Central Stitches

You're braver than me. I tried to make a Harry Potter scarf, and always ended up forgetting to change colors at the wrong time. Silly me! I gave up on the scarf, because I want to make it right this time. Welcome to the party!
